Crystals divide opinion. People believe that by holding crystals and placing them near or on your body, you are interacting with your body’s energy field. You may have heard your energy field be described as a chakra.
I first came across crystals on a trip to Sri Lanka. I noticed that everybody wore them. Mostly, they were worn as necklaces. Whenever we used a taxi, a crystal would be hanging up where, in the UK, we’d hang an air freshener. I became intrigued by them because (and I appreciate this is for various reasons and not just as a result of crystals) people in Sri Lanka are a lot happier with a lot less than us.
Do Crystals Actually Work?
I’ve read numerous studies about crystals; most of them are pretty unconventional. I was trying to look for a solid scientific link. Why did I feel calmer when I held the crystals? The truth is, there isn’t really any solid research to prove that the energies in crystals match up to the energy in our bodies. Crystals fall in the same grey area as horoscopes.
This hasn’t deterred me, though. Because ultimately, who cares if it’s a placebo effect? If it works for you, it works for you.
Personally, though, I do believe in the connection between the lunar phases and our moods. If the moon can impact something as powerful as the tides of the ocean, I believe it can influence my body and mind. Especially given we’re made mostly of water. I use my crystals in combination with the moon’s phases.
Anyway — I’m not here to try to convince you. If you’re here, perhaps you’re sceptical or you’d just like to know more. So, I’ve put this post together to give you beginner’s guide to crystals.
What Is A Chakra?
Chakra is a part of Indian Sanskrit. According to Sanskrit, you have seven chakras in your body. That means you have seven centres of spiritual power in your body. People believe that the key to mental and physical health is to keep all seven chakras in alignment. Picture your body like a machine. If you clog one part, the machine as a whole won’t work.
The seven chakras are:
The Root Chakra
This is located at the bottom of the spine. When all is well in this chakra, you feel safe, calm and secure. Your root chakra becomes blocked if something threatens your basic needs for survival; food, shelter, money. If your root chakra is blocked, aside from feelings of anxiety, you may also have a sore lower back, feel cold and have low energy levels.
The Sacral Chakra
This is located 2cm below your belly button. It holds the key to your creative energy but also to sexuality. It becomes blocked if you’re unhappy in a relationship, if you’ve received bad feedback or if you’re doubting yourself creatively. A blocked Sacral Chakra can make you feel bored and uninspired. It can lower sex drive and make you feel resistant to change. If your Sacral Chakra is blocked, you may become addicted to something; drugs, alcohol, gambling, eating, shopping.
The Solar Plexus Chakra
This is sometimes called the ‘personal power’ chakra and is located at the top of your abdomen. It’s vital for your self-esteem and an aligned Solar Plexus Chakra helps you to map out a clear route to success. Feelings of low self-worth, unpleasant encounters and perceived failures can misalign this chakra. A small blockage may mean your confidence is shaken. A large blockage could be a bigger self-esteem problem. If your Solar Plexus Chakra is off, you may have digestive problems or memory loss.
The Heart Chakra
This is directly correlated with your ability to love and be compassionate toward others. It’s found directly above the heart. When this is aligned, you’ll feel empathy for others and feel emotionally open. This chakra becomes misaligned when you have a breakup (in love or in friendship) or are grieving. When it’s blocked you’ll feel impatient towards others and you’ll find it difficult to trust people. This can also manifest itself as high blood pressure or a low immune system.
The Throat Chakra
Located in the middle of the throat, this correlates with how well you can communicate your feelings. With an aligned Throat Chakra, you’ll be able to speak your truth and feel listened to. It can become misaligned by something like a difficult job interview or an argument. If it’s blocked, you may feel like you’re not being listened to or appreciated or that you’re not able to say what you’d really like to say.
The Third Eye Chakra
This is a powerful chakra which is home to your intuition. It’s found in the centre of your brow and, when working correctly, should keep you aligned with the universe. When your third eye is open, you pick up on signs and are open to opportunities. If you’ve ever read books like The Secret, The Celestine Prophecy or The Alchemist, you’ll notice that this chakra correlates with them. Your third eye can be closed if somebody is doubting you or if you choose rationality over instinct. If it’s closed, you may feel insignificant or lose faith in your purpose. Physically, you might have trouble sleeping or feel clumsy.
The Crown Chakra
This is the highest chakra which determines your spiritual connection. It’s located at the top of your head and is vital if you are to create the life you love. When it’s not blocked, you’ll be attuned to the beauty around you (much like in The Celestine Prophecy) and life will feel worthwhile. A difficult life experience can block this chakra. You may feel adrift with symptoms of depression if this chakra is blocked. Physically, Sanskrit suggests that this is the cause of chronic headaches.
How Do Your Chakras Relate To Crystals?
Now you have a basic understanding of chakras you can begin to monitor your body closely. When you’re stressed, which of your seven chakras (based on the information above) is misaligned? For example, if I have trouble sleeping it’s usually because my Third Eye Chakra is closed. This is usually because I’m doubting myself.
You can then use crystals to balance your chakras. Because crystals are earth elements and chakras are all about your alignment with the universe, it is suggested that you can realign yourself with your crystals. It’s all about balancing your physical body with your etheric body. Etheric body – put simply – is our energy and awareness of our physical body.
Every person and object has an energy and we’re all vibrating at different frequencies. When we’re happy we emit high vibes and when we’re sad – you get the gist. Energy is interchangeable, but we can use crystals to change this energy and align ourselves with the vibe we desire.
How Can I Use Crystals To Raise My Vibrations?
In the same way that we have some friends who calm us and other friends who hype us up, crystals can do the same. You don’t have to know a lot about chakras to know that some days you feel rubbish and other days you don’t. Crystals can help you to calm nerves, motivate yourself, energise yourself etc.. There’s a crystal for everything.
Your Crystal Starter-Pack
There are hundreds of options to choose from. When I came to look for a couple of crystals to find out if any of this interested me, I didn’t know where to start. A friend of mine made some very helpful suggestions and I am now passing them onto you.
Rose Quartz is the stone of the heart (or the heart chakra). It’s the beautiful light pink stone in the picture above. It radiates love and helps you to feel true compassion for those around you and yourself. If you’re having feelings of low self-esteem, the Rose Quartz is for you. It will guide you away from your ego or other negative influences and help you to achieve your goals.
This is the one that I’ve used the most. It’s the sunshine yellow crystal in the picture above. I often hold it when I’m reading at night. That’s just what feels right for me. It’s the success crystal. It harnesses professional, personal and financial success. It burns away negativity like the sun burning through the clouds.
This beautiful rich purple crystal promotes balance within our inner emotions. It’s all about soothing your soul with clarity and calm. If you’re up against a tricky situation, you’ll find that the amethysts vibrations will lull you into a relaxed state. It’s a great one to hold before bed.
Ok, I’ve got my crystals – what do I do with them?
Whatever you like, is the short answer. You can hold them, place them on your chakras, keep them next to your bed. Really – whatever you want. Some people like to leave them outside at night to draw in the moon’s energy. I’ll discuss the moon and the lunar phases in more detail in a separate blog post because I don’t want to overwhelm you with information.
I’d thoroughly recommend picking up The Power Of Crystal Healing by Emma Lucy Knowles. It’s a really good starter book & it helped me to understand whether or not crystals were for me.
